Pre-congress Tour

This year’s APDSA Pre-Tour on 9 Aug coincidentally falls on Singapore’s 51st National Day! Our National Day is undeniably Singapore’s largest celebration of the year, where all citizens regardless of race or religion come together to celebrate our unity and success as a Nation. The parade includes a showcase of Singapore’s Armed Forces Military Column, performances by different ethnic groups and also Sing-Alongs of our most beloved National Day songs.

APDSA will be hosting the Pre-Tour over at Singapore Flyer, the World’s second tallest Ferris wheel, where Pre-Tour guests will be treated to a ‘Live Screening’ of the National Day Parade over a sit-down dinner in Singapore Flyer’s Event Hall, and will also be treated to an aerial view of our National Day fireworks display while atop the Singapore Flyer. Come sign up for our Pre-Tour to get a glimpse of Singapore’s unique culture!

Young Dentists Forum

The Young Dentists Forum (YDF) 2016 is a staple of the APDSA Annual Congress Singapore where young dentists and students come together to discuss themes and topics with a panel of renowned professionals in their field. This year’s discussion topics will revolve around The Spirit of Volunteerism and Practice Management.

YDF1: The Spirit of Volunteerism
Dental care among low income and rural populations remain limited despite our best intentions. Demand for dental care in these populations are generally high due to a host of factors. Low oral hygiene awareness, dietary habits and lack of access to fluoride results in higher caries rates in these populations. Although there is a high demand for dental education and treatment, access to dental care is constrained by logistical and financial factors. Dental care often requires equipment, power and clean water that may not be readily available in rural populations. Dental treatment is also costly and can pose as a barrier to treatment.

There is enormous good to be done through volunteer efforts to meet these demands. Volunteer projects aim to alleviate the basic dental needs of these populations that would otherwise go unmet. Our forum aims to showcase how young dentists and dental students can help plan and participate in these projects both locally and overseas. Led our moderator Dr Shahul Hameed, our experienced speakers Prof. Someth Hong, Dr Vijayan Loganathan, Dr Myra Elliot, and Dr Kenichi Tanaka will provide insights and examples on their projects, highlighting the array of ways a young dentist or student can give back to society by volunteering their services.

YDF2: Practice Management
Young dentists often feel illequipped to face the working world, despite going through rigorous training in the course of dental school. While dental school equips an individual dentist with the basic skills to meet the demands of the society, it is often impossible for young graduates to be well versed in the area of general practice management. Hence, this forum aims to provide young dentists with a brief overview of general practice management. Led by our moderator, Dr Ronnie Yap and drawing on the vast and diverse experiences of our speakers, Dr Lim Ching Chiat; Dr Kelvin Chye; Dr Jeffrey Yeh and Dr Wong Keng Mun, this forum will cover the basics of general practice management, the challenges faced in startup and running a practice, the variety of general practices, as well as the important handles to build a successful practice.

Singapore Tour

Despite Singapore being a small Country, only spanning 50km by 27km, the APDSA LOC will impress you as to how much Singapore can pack into our small island. Happening on 11 August, our Amazing Race programme hopes to immerse you into the best of our culture in Singapore’s central district, exposing you to our Lion City’s most iconic architecture such as Marina Bay Sands, Arts Science Museum, Singapore Flyer, Gardens by the Bay, the ‘Durian’ Esplanade, and more!!!

Our friendly Group Leaders will bring everyone out to the most Singaporean way of eating out – Hawker Centres! You could easily all sorts of unique Asian-fusion food (and a drink) with less than 10 bucks (self-paying)! The atmosphere is definitely worthy of experiencing as well.

Night Tour

Our main night event this year will be: Shopping Spree at Bugis Street. Participants will get to immerse in Singapore’s own version of a night market, tackling the local shop vendors for the lowest prices and weaving through crowds to find hidden gems throughout the street. Together with local bars and cafes around the area offering a diverse range of gastronomical delights, good food is a guarantee and you surely will not be disappointed.

Alternatively, for those who prefer uncovering the gems that Mother Nature has to offer, look no further for we present: the Singapore Night Safari! Here, participants experience the first wildlife night safari in the world which boasts nocturnal animals from all over the world and thrilling live performances. This is definitely not one to be missed!

Cultural Night @ Gardens by the Bay

GBB is the Singapore’s first and largest outdoor nature park that spans across 101 hectares of land. Apart from the outdoor park that houses the iconic SuperTrees, GBB is also home to two fully air-conditioned indoor conservatories – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. This project, headed by National Parks Board Singapore, has garnered countless International Awards over the years and has attracted more than 20 million visitors.

This year’s APDSA Culture Night / Closing Ceremony will be held in the famedFlower Field Hall of GBB, Singapore’s premier location for Fashion Shows, Gala Dinners and even Weddings. In addition, you will be given an after-hours tour of the internationally acclaimed Flower Dome, made exclusively available to APDSA Delegates. Instagram lovers, get your phones ready and snap away!

Post Congress Tour

Our Post-Tour programme has been planned with you – the Delegates – in mind. We hope to expose you to unique activities that you will not experience yourself as a typical tourist in Singapore!

Start the day off with an exhilarating experience on a kayak. Take in the beautiful scenery and paddle with other participants on this adventure down the Kallang River where you can enjoy a different view of many iconic places including the Flower Dome (in Gardens By the Bay) and the Marina Barrage.

Travel to Sentosa, Singapore’s premier Island Resort (yes, Singapore Island does have a few Islands around!) via Cable Car to soak in the views of Singapore’s South! Sentosa is home to countless attractions such as the MegaZip Adventure Park, the Skyline Luge, and iFly Singapore.

Step into the S.E.A. Aquarium in Resorts World Sentosa, the second largest Aquarium in the world, home to more than 100,000 marine animals across 49 different habitats. This attraction is one not to be missed!!!

An exciting night will be spent with your APDSA buddies in the Kampong Huts at Costa Sands Resort at Sentosa Island, Siloso Beach. We will expose you to Singapore’s popular pastime of barbecuing local dishes such as Satay, and Otak-otak, as well as play local beach games to celebrate the new friendships forged!

What’s more, the best bars on beach are just 2-minutes walk away! Be sure not to miss your chance to enjoy a drink with the night sea breeze.

Four people will be housed in a hut – literally. It’s not going to be as comfy as a nice hotel room but it is the camaraderie that matters, is it not? 🙂
